James A. Wilkerson
for Larimer County Coroner

I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through this election. I will do my best to fulfill the needs of the office in a responsible, ethical and caring manner.

I am a Republican who resides in the Larimer County portion of Windsor, Colorado. I have been Coroner for four years, a Regional Medical Examiner, Forensic Pathology Consultant, and Chief Deputy Medical Examiner for the Larimer County Coroner's office for nearly six years.

I am a second generation pathologist and grew up assisting my father and his partners in their pathology practice. My formal education began with a Chemistry degree from Birmingham Southern College in Alabama where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. I received my medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham while on an U. S. Army scholarship. I received my medical training in the Army culminating with a prestigious Forensic Pathology Fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC.

I served a total of 11 years honorable active duty U.S. Army service. After becoming triple-board certified by the American Board of Pathology, I served the Army as Regional Medical Examiner and taught Forensic Pathology to Army and Air Force medical pathology residents. I continue to teach coroners and deputy coroners in Colorado at Colorado Coroner's Association regular meetings and at the Coroner's Basic Course conducted annually at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas, Wyoming. Teaching is one of my favorite activities and I often teach others at the autopsy table.

I now apply my Regional Armed Forces Medical Examiner expertise as a civilian working in Wyoming and Colorado. I am appointed to the Wyoming State Coroner's Standards Board by the Governor of Wyoming. In addition to conducting hundreds of death scene investigations and thousands of medico-legal autopsies, I have managed an Army hospital laboratory and been Chief of Staff at a community medical center. I traveled on national and international deployments during my fellowship training and gained experience in situations requiring mass casualty management. I am a member of the National Association of Medical Examiners, the Northern Colorado Medical Society, the American College of Physician Executives and the Colorado Medical Society.

I will use my extensive education and experience to manage medico-legal death investigations for the citizens of Larimer County. I will work closely with the citizens through our highly trained ABMDI (American Board of Medico-Legal Death Investigators) and POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified investigators to confirm the identity, protect the property, and maintain respect and evidence-integrity for our deceased at death scenes and local hospitals. As a Forensic Pathologist, I will perform high-quality post-mortem exams with Deputy Coroner assistance to determine cause and manner of death and prepare findings for use in legal proceedings. I will participate in all legal proceedings when needed. As a Forensic Pathologist leader, I will continue to meet the Larimer County requirements for certification by the National Association of Medical Examiners, a rare and challenging certification process for death investigation systems. I will maintain the integrity of the office of the coroner, its ethical responsibilities and the highest standards of service to Larimer County and the state of Colorado.

Dr. Patrick Allen established a Medical Examiner System for Larimer County beginning in 1978. This system is run by a Forensic Pathologist (M.D.) and is considered superior to a system run by a lay coroner without the same medical qualifications. This system is preferred by the National Association of Medical Examiners, The Larimer County Law Enforcement and legal officials tasked with investigating and adjudicating non-natural deaths in Larimer County and the National Academy of Sciences.

I have been happily married to my wife Kimberly for 34 years. We raised 3 children who have successful careers and are loving every minute spent with our two grandchildren. We are also enjoying our exchange student from Eastern Europe who is living with us for a year.
